Matariki and Sustainability

This term the Junior Syndicate are learning about Sustainability. We looked at different types of habitats and learnt about resources. When we looked at the loss of Orangutan habitats in Indonesia we learnt about man-made and natural resources.

Our Challenge: During our Matariki celebration we had to create a kite using natural resources or recycled resources. These are some of the kites created by Room 27 and the other Year 2 classes.

We will be adding more photos as they go onto the wall.

Challenge in Maths

Today Miss Johnson set us a Maths challenge! We all had different challenges to do and we had to prove that we had done it by using a photograph.

Stars: The Stars had to use the jumbo constructions set to build something that was taller than Miss Johnson.

How do you think we went?
This tower was built by Zahkiel and Naharia. Is it taller than Miss Johnson?

This tower was built by Oynix and Aliza. Is it taller than Miss Johnson?

Moons: We had to build a zoo that had different habitats for all of the animals. We had to think about what the animals needed to survive and had to be careful that we didn't but predators with their prey.

How did the Moons do?

Inquiry Learning- Nathan's Questions

As part of our inquiry cycle KWHLAQ, we need to ask questions to find out more information and to give our inquiry as focus.

Nathan has some amazing questions that he needs help answering, even Miss Johnson doesn't know the answer to these. But we hope one of you might.

Do all worms have five hearts?
What happens to a worm if it loses one of its hearts?
What makes worms able to survive if part of their body is cut off?

We need your help!

Room 27 are learning about the different communities that we belong to. We know that we belong to our church communities, our local communities, and our school community, but is there more?

Miss Johnson told us that we belong to a global community, but what is this? We are looking at all the places that our blog travels around the world, to see how far the ideas and learning in Room 27, in Papatoetoe New Zealand, can reach.

We would love to hear from you and add your location to our map. Please tell us if you read our blog where you are from. It helps us build connections with the world beyond our known.

Worms continued...

Yesterday we looked at the different  parts of a worm and how these help the worm to do its very special job! We learnt how to label, as well as some very new words.

Using our diagram and labels we wanted to share with you, (our audience), the different ways that each body part helps the worm to help us!
